Revealing the Unseen: Tourism, Art and Photography is an academic article by Steve Garlick, first published in 2002. Garlick examines the role photography plays in shaping the touristic experience. He argues that "by foregrounding the role of photographic images in the production of memory and self-identity, it is suggested that tourism can be understood as the creation of one's life as a work of art."

Completed in 2019 as part of my university studies, this project responded to a brief to design a publication around an academic article of my choosing. Garlick’s writing resonated deeply with my own experiences as a tourist and photographer, particularly during my first trip to Japan, offering a framework to reflect on the images we take, and why we take them.

A flexible 8-column, 12-row grid was implemented to allow dynamic placements across each spread while maintaining an underlying order. Typography plays a central role in supporting the publication’s documentary tone. Antarctican Mono brings a utilitarian sharpness to headings, while Acumin Pro Wide offers clean, readable body text. The inclusion of Hiragino Sans GB introduces a foreign typographic element that reflects the cultural specificity of the photography and opens partial accessibility to Japanese readers. Generous white space was used deliberately throughout, reinforcing the minimal tone and allowing each photograph to stand on its own.
